"Said And Done"
The world's number one trad conjunto
accordionist, Flaco Jimenez, delivers another gold standard of
hardcore conjunto stomps and country-tinged polkas. New singer
Nunie Rubio delivers the right mix of pride and pain in the rousing
"Siempre Quiero Estar Contigo" and the heartbreak bolero
"Recuerda." All throughout Jimenez is at the top of
his game, pulling new moods and textures out of his accordion
with awesome facility. The lively "Soulmates" is a
textbook sample on melding rockabilly spirit with old-world conjunto--piping
hot accordion runs over thumping percussion funky enough to raise
the dead. Flaco Jimenez throws in perky cumbias and rockabilly-country
fusion for good measure. Perfect border-town party music. --Ramiro

God bless Flaco Jimenez. He may not sell millions or be a poster
boy for the Latino movement, but the man has class, integrity
and conviction in his playing. He has been, as the experienced
music reporter Ramiro Burr pointed out, "The world's best
ambassador' for conjunto music." As Mr. Burr explains in
his marvelous book "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional
Mexican Music," on Billboard Books, "Jimenez was universally
recognized as leading exponent of authentic South Texas conjunto.
While there are many masters of the accordion along the Texas-Mexican
border, none have toured Europe, Japan and other points overseas
or recorded with as many pop, rock and country artists as Jimenez.
By all accounts, Jimenez was an international icon for the accordion-fueled
conjunto genre." Thank you Mr. Burr and thank you Mr. Jimenez. |
