"Live In Paris & Toronto"
McKennitt's two-CD set, plucked from
performances in Paris and Toronto, documents the modern-day troubadour's
live dimension, luxuriously unraveling Loreena McKennitt's talents
on harp, accordian, and piano like a finely woven tapestry. Her
voice is in finely polished form here--no hints of hoarse tour
fatigue whatsoever. "Marco Polo," a delicious, trancelike
jam on The Book of Secrets, rushes a bit too quickly, lacking
the expansive, improvised groove that could've richly garnished
this tasty track. But this is a small bit of tarnish on the silver
beauty of this magnificent collection, brought to life by the
Loreena McKennitt ensemble of violin, cello, hurdy-gurdy, bass,
and percussion that all interlock lovingly with Loreena's angelic
voice. And what makes this gem even more beautifully poignant
is its dedication to Loreena McKennitt's fiancé, who died
in July, 1998, in a boating accident.--Karen Karleski |

In 1992, I found a copy of The Visit
in the public library and checked it out on a whim. Lucky me,
since I have had the privledge of listening to one of the most
beautiful voices ever captured anywhere for the last eight years.
Loreena's Live In Paris and Toronto, is, simply put, the best
live album I have ever heard, period. Yes, there are some uneven
spots, and some may like their favorite song better in its studio
version, but over all, the entire album is stunning, the playing
flawless, and the production excellent. |
