"Gloria!"
In the middle of the techno
revolution, it was a bit of a risky move for her to release Gloria!,
an album of pure, unadulterated disco that sounds as if it could
have been recorded two decades earlier. The risk paid off, though,
because the album turned out to be one of her best--a nonstop
dance party that keeps cooking through beat-heavy thumpers such
as "Heaven's What I Feel," "Oye," and "I
Just Wanna Be Happy"--the latter two bring in some of the
Latin elements of her Miami Sound Machine days. Two concessions
to current music trends include a duet with Wyclef Jean on "Don't
Release Me" and the politically charged lyrics of "Cuba
Libre" that cause you to think while you dance. --Daniel

Estefan es muy picante! Oh, please excuse my bad attempt at writing
in Spanish... ahem. Anyway, to put it mildly: this album rocks.
I mean, this marvelous piece of factory-produced plastic never
leaves my CD player, and it has got to be Gloria's best since
"Cuts Both Ways"... maybe even her best, period! "Don't
Stop" is THE coolest dance track ever, right next to her
remake of the disco classic "Turn the Beat Around"
(which you can find on the album "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss
Me"). And "Oye"... oooh, that's just enough to
spice up ANY party. "Oye, me cuerpo pide salsa... y con
este ritmo... vamos a bailar..." It certainly makes MY body
ask for some salsa. The dance, I mean... not the other... oh,
never mind. Ahem. Now throw in some more awesome dance tracks,
a little rap on the side (yes, RAP! Wycleff Jean makes a guest
appearence), a dash of hip-hop, and... voila... an instant classic!
Just do yourself a favor and BUY THIS ALBUM... I promise that
you won't regret it. DISCO INFERNO! |
